I've been blogging a lot lately about mobile as an emerging marketing channel. Lately I've been thinking about the iPod, and how underutilized it is. Here we have a somewhat standardized platform, with content delivery pretty well worked out. Content is still filtered through apple, but it's not a "walled garden" like the mobile carriers. It's relatively easy to make your content available. The iPods ship with a few games and simple applications on them. I've found a couple of people out there who are developing new ones. A company called ZappTek makes some business apps, one adds PDA functionality to your iPod, another makes it capable of displaying PowerPoint presentations.
According to a February 2005 survey from The Pew Internet & American Life Project, more than 22 million American adults own iPods or MP3 players, 29% have downloaded podcasts.
I believe the iPod has huge potential as a marketing channel. It's being utilized to some extent, through podcasts, but what else can we do with it? Brand entertainment comes immediately to mind. What sort of people use iPods. Can we target content to them somehow based on the music that they listen too? Apple has added this sort of functionality to iTunes. What about branded iPod games? Interactive video? Multimedia iPod add-ons. Technically speaking, all of this stuff is possible. Point is, it seems like there's so much potential, and so little focus. If anyone knows about anything interesting and relevant, please let me know.

I'd agree that the iPod as a distribution method has great potential, although it seems to me that the greatest value will come through public relations applications rather than pure marketing ones.
Hospitals, for example, are just stepping into podcasting. The ones that seem to have the most potential are taking an narrowcasted educational approach, rather than a "news" or advertising approach. Now, I guess you could call that targeted marketing, but my guess is that Public Relations departments will be the place that a lot of pod-related work finally ends up since such productions will be heavy on writing and relationship development tactics.

Yes, even MLB teams are now using iPods for players to track their swings, or pitching motion. iTunes will even have a new show pilot premiere for free in the iTunes Music Store 6 days before airing the same show. I think the niche peer-to-peer distribution methods are spelling the end of cable & satellite as we know it and soon ala carte on-demand is going to take over. Where does advertising make its money in such a world? Who knows. With new products such as Philip Hodgetts' "Intellicaster", which removes commercials from aired content, compresses, and streams with automation, who can run the typical spot anymore? Personally, I love it and little gems like "Goodnight Burbank" make having the iPod at the gym that much better.
Ipod Freedom release Date July 4th, 2006 New hot
Ipod Freedom release Date July 4th, 2006
New hot rumor, guys ;)
The new Ipod has no buttons, no scroll wheel, no headphone jack, no dock connector. In other words freedom from everything. The most aesthetic piece of technology ever conceived.
1. Power Supply through SplashPower. Similar to those toothbrushes and razors that charge through there plastics with magnetic fields.(strange they haven't updated there site since September 05...did Apple acquire them?)
2. Transfer of songs...Wireless USB
3. Headphone jack...Bluetooth
4. Navigation...virtual touchless/touch screen. As your finger moves over the ipods screen a virtual scrolling interface pops up allowing for more screen real-estate. fingerprints?? not to worry you don't actually have to touch the screen, embedded in/behind the lcd are capacitors that can tell, which direction your fingers are going.
5. Hold Button/Power On fingerprint screen identification(great for if your ipod is stolen)
So, there you have it a completely enclosed ipod, so elegant as not to have a single button or port opening or anything but a beautiful screen... Apple will release the Ipod July 4th 2006... Independence Day... free your self from everything.
*ipod Nano will still have dock connector for now.
Keep up the great work on your blog. Best wishes WaltDe
